Through our support attendees learn:
to use: email, Skype & messaging to keep in touch with family and friends
to access: useful sources of information such as the local council and entertainment online such as the BBC
how to benefit from: the time saving convenience of online shopping and services such as Ebay and Amazon.
We provide these services ‘where people are’ – in people’s own homes or places where they feel “at home”.
For the past six years for example, Tap into IT has been working with Viewpoint Housing Association. We run IT support clubs in 8 different Viewpoint premises as well as various one to one support sessions.
Each club is run by a facilitator helped by PVG checked and trained volunteers from the local community.
As an additional benefit, connecting people sessions offer a regular social occasion to attendees, helping reduce their social isolation and contributing to their well-being and sense of community.
Tap Into IT aims to work in partnership with community networks and other organisations to enhance the welfare of the potentially vulnerable groups we support.
We also work hard to bring the practical benefits of the internet to those with additional needs.
For example, supporting dementia sufferers in accessing videos or music online that can help to reconnect them with their past and keep them in touch with others.
We seek partnerships with funders and specialist organisations where possible.
In other words, we do whatever we can to enable people to get the benefits of the internet and ‘computer’ use here and now.
For some, that will be via traditional digital skills training, for others it will involve more of a ‘hands on’ approach.
We also deliver one to one training and remote support to users in their own homes through trained Digital Support Workers. Users pay a fee or are grant-funded.
At present, we have over 125 active one to one customers throughout Edinburgh, most of whom are retired or semi-retired.
Remote support is provided via the internet and helps to resolve problems that arise e.g. with opening email attachments, dealing with error messages, adjusting settings etc.
30 minute ‘sessions’ are available Mon-Sat for up to 3 hours daily. These can be booked by phone, email or via our website.
